Esmé Patterson emerged from Denver, Colorado's folk scene with a voice very much her own. Her second album, but her first released on Xtra Mile in 2015, Woman To Woman is an inspired collection, each song drawing from female characters in famous songs and telling their stories from a new perspective. Replies to The Beach Boys 'Oh, Caroline' and Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' aren't just glorious melodies and textures but tales of women reaching out from the notes and the lyrics to be recognised as they should - as people, not mere ciphers for male longing or perspective. 2014 saw Esmé reach a new audience through her collaboration with Shakey Graves after performing on the Conan O'Brien show, and touring with Shakey in the US. After the attention garnered from that breakthrough album, Esmé crafted a record that was less tightly controlled, looser, and more in keeping with her spirit. We Were Wild was released in 2016, and saw her accompany Frank Turner on a thorough tour of the UK in the autumn of that year. Whether she's giving life to sadly departed female astronauts, as on Frank's 'Silent Key', delivering sublime acoustic-led songs or kicking up the pace with a full rock band, Esmé hasn't got anything to prove and plenty to tell you.
