Oxygen Thief Jan 1, 2024

It's not often we at Xtra Mile are stalked relentlessly only to turn around and offer the persistent pest a record deal for being so obviously great. But that's how Oxygen Thief - Bristol's Barry Dolan – got his debut EP released. After appearing on the lineup of various Xtra Mile events, supporting our acts, drinking our beer, it seemed prudent to allow him into the family; he was practically adopted for the whole of 2012/13 anyway. 2013's Accident's Don't Happen, They Are Caused introduces the current incarnation of Oxygen Thief after a cameo appearance alongside Ben Marwood and Jim Lockey on a three-way split EP back in 2009. Dragging two more reprobates in – from fellow family members from The Retrospective Soundtrack Players - for a beefier, more terrifying sound, they accompany Barry's resplendent battle cry in a full-on assault, drawing an astute comparison with fellow labelmate Jamie Lenman's past endeavours in Reuben. They showed what they could do on second full-length The Half-Life of Facts but really doubled down on the heavy and the political rhetoric (as the years doubled down on us) with the sublime third album Confusion Species. It goes to show that you may get what you wish for, as long as you break and enter line ups, kidnap support slots, and generally convince us you're worth a punt with your brilliant music.
